With new rigorous research being carried out on the possible health risks associated with sunbed use strict regulations and guidelines have now been introduced in order to promote consistent good practice throughout the industry.

StudioTracker has embedded these tanning guidelines and regulations into its software to ensure users are protected, as sunbed owners failing to comply with regulations can be faced with fines of up to £20,000. This will not only ensure that your business is looking after your customer’s health but also ensures your salon maintains a good reputation and that there is no breaking of the law, you as the salon owner may abide by the regulations but you cannot always be around to ensure your staff always do.

Sunbed Regulations:

Scotland - The law came into force on 1 December 2009. It is illegal to allow anyone under 18 to use, purchase or hire a sunbed.

England & Wales - The law came into force on 8 April 2011. It is illegal to allow anyone under 18 to use a sunbed.

Northern Ireland - The law came into force on 1^st May 2012. It is illegal to allow anyone under 18 to use a sunbed.

Sunbed Guidelines from The Sunbed Association

Ensure skin is rested for a minimum of 24 hours between each session.

Provide consumers with sufficient information and advice about the tanning suitable for their skin type and ensure this is recorded and tracked.

The European Standard advises not to exceed 60 sessions per annum.

StudioTracker software will now prohibit the use of allowing under 18 year olds onto the sunbed and also will flag up and restrict the use if someone tries to use the sunbed more than once in 24 hours. Furthermore the client contact information will require the software user to select the clients skin type, ensuring this is kept a track of and that the clients skin type coincides with their sunbed usage. The software will also keep log of the beds tube usage to ensure they are properly maintained.
